Showrunner Defends Star Against Racism

When the trolls come for Hudson Williams, Jacob Tierney steps up! 💪🌈 Let’s celebrate diversity and shut down the hate ✌️❤️ #HeatedRivalry

TL;DR

  • Jacob Tierney defends Hudson Williams against racist backlash.
  • Williams faces trolling due to his Asian descent.
  • The cast calls out toxic fan behavior.
  • Tierney emphasizes the importance of diverse representation.
  • The show promotes love and acceptance.

In a world where love should reign supreme, Heated Rivalry’s showrunner Jacob Tierney is taking a stand against the ugly face of racism that has reared its head against lead star Hudson Williams. The Canadian actor, who is of Korean descent, plays Shane Hollander, a character who also embodies Asian heritage. But instead of celebrating this representation, some trolls have decided to hurl abuse at Williams, showing just how toxic fandom can get.

Heated Rivalry has taken the world by storm, catapulting Williams and his co-stars like Connor Storrie and François Arnaud into the spotlight. Yet, with fame comes a darker side—some fans have developed parasocial relationships that lead to harassment. Williams isn’t the only one facing the brunt of this; his co-star Ksenia Daniela Kharlamova, who plays Svetlana, has also been targeted.

Speaking candidly about the backlash, Tierney told Deadline, “We didn’t expect any of this attention or reaction from a public that might not exist at all. We’ve learned a lot [since the show aired], and there’s a lot to think about moving forward in terms of the fandom and all that comes with it, negative and positive.” He further stated, “We have a non-white lead. I think that’s f****** important. We can learn a few lessons out of that: you don’t need to be making an Asian show to have an Asian lead. Hudson’s a f****** star, man.”

But the drama doesn’t stop there. Arnaud, the only out queer member of the cast, has also faced his share of trolling, despite the show being a celebration of queer love. In a bold move, he and Williams took to Instagram to address the hateful comments, stating, “Don’t call yourself a fan if you share racist/homophobic/biphobic/misogynist/ageist/ableist/parasocial/bigoted comments of any kind. None of us need your hateful ‘love’.”

With a message of unity, they urged fans to respect the diversity within their cast and to keep the show’s spirit of love alive. Kharlamova echoed this sentiment, reminding everyone, “Please don’t make a show that’s about love be hateful online.”

As Heated Rivalry continues to gain traction, it’s clear that the fight against racism and bigotry is far from over. But with allies like Tierney, Williams, and the rest of the cast standing up for what’s right, there’s hope that the narrative can shift towards one of acceptance and celebration of diversity. So, let’s raise our voices against hate and support those who dare to be different. After all, love is love, and it deserves to shine bright, free from the shadows of ignorance.
