A RISING STAR GONE IN A FLASH

Another young trans woman has been taken from us — and the LGBTQ community is reeling. Girlalala, a 21-year-old TikTok sensation with nearly 300,000 followers and an electric online presence, was shot and killed Friday in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. Known for her humor, style, and vibrant energy, she had become a beacon of joy and representation in a digital world that far too often sidelines Black trans women.

Authorities say she was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds inside a car outside a suburban home. Moments later, she was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Her death was sudden. Brutal. And devastatingly familiar.

A DEADLY PATTERN OF VIOLENCE

According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, Girlalala and her boyfriend, 25-year-old Shanoyd Whyte Jr., had gotten into a heated verbal argument in Whyte’s vehicle. That tension, investigators say, escalated into physical conflict — and then into deadly violence.

Whyte allegedly admitted that during the fight, he pulled out a firearm. What happened next is still under investigation, but the result is tragically clear: another young Black trans woman lost to the deadly combination of intimate partner violence and gun violence.

When the shooting ended, Whyte called 911, according to arrest records. Deputies arrested him on the spot. He now faces a charge of first-degree murder with a firearm. A gun was recovered at the scene.

Whyte has not indicated whether he has retained an attorney.

A DIGITAL FORCE — AND A REAL-WORLD LOSS

To her fans, Girlalala wasn’t just an influencer. She was a creator who radiated confidence, femininity, humor, and authenticity. Her TikTok presence — filled with hairstyling magic, bold personality, and daily glimpses into her life — made her not just a follow but a favorite.

For many young trans people, she was representation they rarely see: a proud Black trans woman living loudly, stylishly, and unapologetically.

Her light mattered.

THE LGBTQ IMPACT: A COMMUNITY IN MOURNING

Violence against transgender women — especially Black transgender women — remains one of the most urgent and under-addressed crises in America. And Girlalala’s death only adds to the growing list of names we should have never had to learn in memorial threads.

Her killing follows a grim trend: trans and gender-expansive people are significantly more likely to be victims of violence, with intimate partner violence playing an outsized role. When Love turns lethal, it’s often transgender people who pay the highest price.

Every time a trans life is taken, the world becomes a little less bright. For her fans, her community, and everyone who saw themselves reflected in her boldness, this loss is immeasurable.

A CALL FOR JUSTICE — AND PROTECTION

What happened in that car in Lauderdale Lakes is now a matter for the courts, but the broader crisis is everyone’s responsibility. Trans women deserve safety. They deserve support. They deserve partners who love them, not harm them. And they deserve systems that respond before tragedy strikes, not after.

Girlalala built a world for herself online — colorful, joyful, expressive. She deserved the time and safety to keep building it.

Instead, the LGBTQ community is lighting another candle — too soon, too often.
