Renowned pop star Billie Eilish recently expressed her surprise at the need to come out publicly, reflecting on her unintentional disclosure during an interview for Variety’s Power of Women issue. Eilish confirmed her attraction to girls in the November cover story, emphasizing her deep connections with women in her life.
During a press event at Variety’s Hitmakers gathering, Eilish remarked, “I kind of thought, ‘Wasn’t it obvious?'” She revealed that she had not realized that people didn’t already know about her sexuality. She questioned the necessity of coming out, stating, “I’m just like, ‘Why can’t we just exist? I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I just didn’t talk about it. Whoops.'”
Eilish’s candid interview had a profound impact on her queer fanbase, with her words prompting her to acknowledge, “I guess I came out today.” She expressed excitement at the positive response, emphasizing her support for the LGBTQ+ community by saying, “I am for the girls.”
In addition to discussing her sexuality, Eilish also delved into her perception of her own femininity, admitting to struggling with identifying as a feminine person. She revealed, “I’ve never felt like a woman, to be honest with you. I’ve never felt desirable. I’ve never felt feminine.” Despite these feelings, she affirmed her use of ‘she/her’ pronouns.
When asked if her perspective on other women had changed since coming out, Eilish humorously replied, “I’m still scared of them, but I think they’re pretty!” Her journey towards self-discovery and her willingness to openly discuss her experiences continue to resonate with fans and foster important conversations surrounding sexuality and gender norms.
