What began as an organized right-wing boycott against a small LGBTQ+-owned business in Ohio has spectacularly backfired, propelling Bewilderment Candle & Gift Shop to new heights of success. Owner Brandon Love, based in Lancaster, Ohio, shared his unexpected delight after his business saw a surge in sales following a targeted anti-LGBTQ+ campaign by a local conservative group.
Instead of seeing a decline, Bewilderment experienced an influx of support from both locals and visitors from surrounding areas and even other states. Love, speaking to a local news outlet, noted, “We’ve probably had at least 200 people who have never been to Lancaster come to support us. The outreach from both Columbus and out-of-state customers has been overwhelming.”
At the heart of this unusual reversal is the store’s strong advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights. Bewilderment has consistently used its platform to voice its support for inclusivity and equality, leading to its selection as a target for a conservative boycott. But instead of diminishing the business, it spurred an outpouring of solidarity from the LGBTQ+ community and its allies. Love made clear that the attacks against his business represent more than personal grievances—they are attacks on the broader LGBTQIA+ community.
“These accusations are baseless and serve to reflect the hate and paranoia that these groups are pushing,” Love stated, pointing to the harmful rhetoric often employed, including the “groomer” conspiracy theory. He vowed not to be intimidated by these tactics, asserting his continued commitment to standing against prejudice.
The boycott has inadvertently drawn attention to other local businesses standing in solidarity with LGBTQ+ rights. Mud Gallery, another pro-LGBTQ+ establishment owned by Teresa Speakman, similarly saw a boost in support. Speakman, who flies Pride flags across her gallery, expressed her gratitude for the many visitors who have acknowledged her space as a welcoming environment for all.
This wave of support underscores the resilience of LGBTQ+ communities and their allies in the face of discriminatory campaigns. What was meant to undermine businesses like Bewilderment instead highlights the broader movement for inclusivity, fostering a sense of unity and defiance.
