  • PM Rob Jetten reflects on historic legalization
  • Three couples married at City Hall
  • Mayor Halsema emphasizes ongoing challenges
  • Progress in LGBTQ+ rights continues globally

On April 1, 2026, Amsterdam was alive with love and celebration as it marked a monumental milestone in LGBTQ+ history: the 25th anniversary of same-sex marriage legalization. The Netherlands made history on this very day in 2001, becoming the first country in the world to embrace the union of same-sex couples, and boy, did they celebrate in style!

With Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten leading the festivities, the event was a heartfelt reminder of how far the nation has come. Jetten, who is also the first openly gay prime minister of the Netherlands, reminisced about watching the first same-sex weddings unfold on television when he was just a teenager. “I can still remember when I was 14 years old watching TV, seeing the first couples getting married here in Amsterdam. That was also very inspiring and emancipating for me, personally, as it has been for so many others,” he shared with pride.

To commemorate this landmark occasion, three same-sex couples tied the knot at Amsterdam’s City Hall in the early hours of the morning. Among them were Eelke de Jong and Elton Dos Santos Fiame, who described their wedding as deeply meaningful. “It’s the milestone to celebrate a big accomplishment from 25 years ago of what happened. And we were just too excited to be a part of it,” Dos Santos Fiame expressed joyfully.

As the celebrations unfolded, Mayor Femke Halsema took the stage to reflect on the journey of LGBTQ+ rights in the Netherlands. “You know, we had a conservative government for a couple of years and there was no good news for gay rights,” she noted. Yet, with a gay prime minister at the helm, she believes the future looks brighter. “And now we have a gay prime minister who is very self-aware and proud. And I think for young gay people it’s a great example,” she added, emphasizing the importance of representation.

While the day was filled with joyous celebrations, Halsema also reminded everyone that the fight for LGBTQ+ rights is far from over. “So we’re celebrating and we’re also protesting a little bit today,” she said, highlighting the need for continued advocacy and progress. As more than 36,000 couples have since exchanged vows in the Netherlands, the ripple effect of this historic legislation has inspired dozens of countries around the world to follow suit in recognizing same-sex marriage.

As we raise our glasses to 25 years of love and equality, let’s remember that the journey is ongoing. The Netherlands may have paved the way, but there’s still much work to be done globally. Cheers to love, to progress, and to the beautiful couples who continue to inspire us all!
