Charli XCX, known for her bold approach to music and high-energy performances, is now taking a significant step towards fulfilling a long-held aspiration: acting. The singer recently wrapped up filming for Erupcja, a new movie by director Pete Ohs, in Warsaw, Poland. The film, whose title means “eruption” in Polish, follows the story of two women, including Charli’s character Bethany, as they navigate an unexpected journey in Poland. The cast also features actor Jeremy O. Harris and Polish star Lena Góra.

The singer’s venture into acting comes on the heels of a busy year promoting her album Brat and collaborating with Troye Sivan on the Sweat Tour. Despite her packed schedule, Charli has clearly been looking for new ways to express her creativity. “I’m already thinking about acting more seriously,” she shared in a recent interview. “There’s something exhilarating about being in front of a camera in a way that’s different from performing on stage.”

Director Pete Ohs noted the challenges of keeping the project under wraps given Charli’s fame. Her presence in Warsaw drew considerable attention, with many fans seizing the opportunity for a quick photo. “She was always kind and approachable, taking selfies with fans even in between filming,” Ohs recounted. Jeremy O. Harris added humorously that this visibility made it tough to keep the film a secret.

For the LGBTQ community, Charli XCX’s evolving career trajectory represents a broader trend of queer and queer-friendly artists expanding into mainstream media. Her openness about shifting from music to acting and exploring diverse artistic pursuits reflects the growing influence of LGBTQ figures in various entertainment realms. Her projects often resonate with queer audiences, not just for the representation they provide but also for the boundary-pushing creativity that is emblematic of queer artistry.
