Disney’s recent financial activities have reignited debate about its stance on LGBTQ+ rights. Despite a public stance against Florida’s controversial “Don’t Say Gay” law, Disney has been found donating substantial amounts to organizations associated with politicians who supported the legislation. The law, officially known as the Parental Rights in Education Bill, restricts discussions on LGBTQ+ topics in Florida’s state schools. Critics argue it suppresses freedom of speech and harms LGBTQ+ visibility.
Records show that Disney’s in-kind contributions this year amount to tens of thousands of dollars. Among the recipients is Daley for Florida, supporting Democrat representative Dan Daley, as well as Florida Farmers and Ranchers United, linked to Republican Josie Tomkow, who backed the law. Additional donations went to Citizens for Solutions and Friends of Joe Gruters, both chaired by Republican lawmakers who voted for the legislation.

Despite these donations, direct monetary contributions from Disney’s headquarters have not resumed. The resumption of in-kind donations, however, underscores the complex dynamics between corporate actions and public stances on social issues. This duality raises questions about corporate responsibility and accountability in political engagement, especially concerning policies that impact marginalized communities.
