A mother in South Carolina is fighting for her son’s rights after the teenager was attacked in his school by other students and a math teacher did nothing to intervene. Natasha Green’s son, who suffers from social communication disorder and identifies as asexual and panromantic, was assaulted and bullied for months by fellow students at Allendale-Fairfax Middle School. In January, the bullies dragged the boy into a bathroom, where they taunted and physically assaulted him, while several other students recorded the incident on their cell phones. The boy’s math teacher, who was present in the bathroom, did not intervene.
The incident has had a lasting effect on the boy, who is now struggling to recognize family members and is in a constant state of fear. Green says that she has been forced to jump through many hoops to get the services that her son needs, and that law enforcement and school authorities have not taken the incident seriously enough. A school resource officer allegedly filed a report incorrectly and then refused to amend it when challenged, according to Green.
Now, Green is taking matters into her own hands by obtaining legal representation and initiating a petition to press charges against the students who attacked her son, expel them for a hate crime, remove the math teacher from the classroom and revoke his work visa, and remove the school resource officer from the school or fire her. Other parents in the area are reportedly planning to organize a protest in support of Green’s son.
