On Thursday, Atlanta police announced the arrest of a 17-year-old male in connection to the murder of a transgender woman, Koko Da Doll, who was featured in the Sundance-winning documentary “Kokomo City.” The shooting occurred on April 18th, and the publicity firm representing the film confirmed that Koko Da Doll was the victim.
The suspect turned himself in on Wednesday after a warrant was obtained for murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. However, the police have not yet provided any information on the suspected motive behind the killing.
This arrest comes amid growing concerns over hate-motivated crimes against the LGBTQ+ community, particularly trans individuals. According to Atlanta police, three transgender women have been killed in the city this year. While they have not found any evidence that the victims were targeted for being transgender, the police understand and share concerns about these crimes.
“Kokomo City” is a documentary that highlights the stories of four Black transgender sex workers in New York City and Georgia. Koko Da Doll, also known as Rasheeda Williams, was one of the film’s subjects. The documentary received three major accolades, including the Sundance Audience Award, at its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
The killing of Koko Da Doll is a tragic reminder of the ongoing violence faced by transgender individuals, particularly those who are Black or people of color. As the LGBTQ+ community continues to fight for equal rights and protections, it is crucial to address and dismantle the systemic discrimination and violence that puts their lives at risk.
