In a shocking incident that underscores the ongoing violence against LGBTQ individuals, a transgender Latina was brutally assaulted outside a Washington bar while trying to assist a stranger. Lillith Barraza Garcia, just 22 years old, found herself in a nightmare scenario after attempting to help a visibly intoxicated person outside Rumors Cabaret Bar in Bellingham, Washington.
On March 23, Garcia and her friend were simply being good Samaritans, getting water and checking on the person slumped outside the bar. But things took a dark turn when the intoxicated man’s friend confronted them. Garcia recognized the man from previous visits to the bar, where he was known for trying to flirt with women. “I found out from a couple of people that he actually goes there with a group of his friends to flirt with women,” she said, hinting at the predatory behavior that often goes unchecked in such spaces.

Initially, the assailant attempted to compliment Garcia, saying she had “great breasts for a man.” But the situation escalated quickly, with the man launching into a tirade of insults before physically attacking her. “He started off by pushing us, and then he started punching me in the chest and face, breaking my glasses,” Garcia recounted. The violence was shocking, leaving her momentarily unconscious and with bruising on her chest, where she had undergone breast augmentation surgery less than a year ago.
Garcia filed a police report immediately after the attack, and while the suspect was initially charged with a misdemeanor, the charges are now being upgraded to a felony due to the hate crime aspect of the assault. “I was told he was part of the Navy, and at first I was a little bit shocked, but then I was like, ‘Oh that makes sense and why he was so strong,’” she explained, reflecting on the brutal nature of the attack.
As she recovers from her injuries, which are thankfully non-life-threatening, Garcia is also dealing with the emotional fallout from the attack. “I’m gonna have to go to Seattle to get my boobs looked at, just because I did have top surgery less than a year ago,” she said, expressing her concern for her health and well-being.
In the wake of this horrific event, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist Garcia with medical expenses, raising over $6,300 so far. The outpouring of support from the community highlights the resilience and solidarity that often emerges in the face of violence against marginalized individuals.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that many LGBTQ individuals face, even in spaces that are meant to be safe. As Garcia continues her recovery, her story sheds light on the urgent need for greater protections and support for the LGBTQ community, particularly in the wake of rising hate crimes.
