Alex Mohajer, the president of the Stonewall Democratic Club of Los Angeles, is forging a pioneering path as he campaigns for the California State Senate in the 37th Senate District. With his potential to be elected, he stands as a strong contender to become the first openly gay Iranian elected anywhere in the world.
Representing Costa Mesa, Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Irvine, Huntington Beach, and other areas of Orange County, Mohajer’s background is both diverse and inspiring. Raised by a single immigrant mother from Iran, he intimately understands the values of perseverance and education. Mohajer’s educational journey led him from public schools and community college in Irvine to earning his undergraduate degree at the esteemed University of California, Berkeley. He then returned to Orange County, where he pursued his passion for law and earned a J.D. from Chapman University School of Law in 2011.
With a decade of experience as a Civil Service Advocate for the County of Los Angeles, Mohajer has devoted himself to combatting sexual harassment and discrimination. Drawing from his personal experiences and the sacrifices made by his family, his platform centers around improving the lives of working-class families, supporting small business owners, and advocating for high-quality public school education.
In addition to his commitment to his constituents, Mohajer is a vocal advocate for pressing social issues. He aims to enhance access to healthcare, particularly for the vulnerable and differently-abled individuals who often fall through the cracks. Mental health is also a top priority, as he seeks to expand resources and support throughout the state.
Mohajer’s activism extends beyond his Iranian heritage. He is a fervent supporter of the Iranian people’s fight for basic human rights, as well as a strong advocate for women’s rights, LGBTQIA+ equality, and marginalized communities. In the face of rising hate against Asian American, Jewish, LGBTQ+, and Black neighbors, he pledges to be a steadfast ally against discrimination.
While addressing social issues, Mohajer recognizes the pressing urgency of addressing climate change. He has pledged to reject campaign contributions from gas and oil lobbies, championing a clean energy economy and striving to bring sustainability to his district.
