A new LGBTQ+ pop romance is set to hit the big screen, as Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel join forces in “Mother Mary”. The film, which is being produced by A24, will follow Hathaway’s character, a fictional pop star, and her romantic relationship with an iconic fashion designer, played by Coel. Billed as an “epic pop melodrama”, the film is expected to explore the complexities of their relationship with some dark undertones.
To add to the excitement, the film’s soundtrack will be entirely created by queer fan-favorite Charli XCX, with Jack Antonoff also assisting with the music duties. And with David Lowery, the director of “A Ghost Story” and “The Green Knight”, at the helm, the film promises to be a visually stunning cinematic experience.
Unsurprisingly, the LGBTQ+ community has reacted positively to the news, with many expressing their excitement and anticipation for the film. The casting of two high-profile actresses, Hathaway and Coel, in the lead roles has only added to the buzz surrounding the project.
But this won’t be Hathaway’s only foray into LGBTQ+ cinema, as she is also set to star in “Eileen”, based on the 2015 novel of the same name. Meanwhile, Coel has previously played a queer character in the highly acclaimed 2020 drama “I May Destroy You”, as well as the character Aneka in the upcoming “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”.
“Mother Mary” is set to start filming in Germany later this year, and with such a talented and diverse cast and crew, it’s sure to be one of the most highly anticipated LGBTQ+ films of the year.
