The Metropolitan Police in London have arrested a 29-year-old man at Gatwick Airport as part of an investigation into a series of burglaries in which dating app Grindr was used by thieves to meet potential victims. Four men between the ages of 32 and 55 were rendered unconscious after they were given a “noxious substance,” waking up to find personal belongings missing. The burglaries took place in Brentford, Hampton, Hounslow, and Bromley between New Year’s Eve and January 9. The victims suffered no lasting effects and all were helping police with their inquiries.
The police identified two suspects in the case, a large black man and a slimmer white man who both spoke Spanish. They believed both men fled the country. The 29-year-old suspect arrested at Gatwick Airport is believed to be one of these men, but the second suspect remains at large. The arrested man is being held in custody at a south London police station.
In January, detectives appealed for more victims to come forward and report the crimes to the police. Detective Superintendent Dan O’Sullivan urged victims to report in confidence to the police or speak to an officer from the LGBTQ+ community. While the suspects have fled the country and the risk to the community is reduced, the police are continuing to engage with partners and those from LGBT independent advisory groups.
The use of dating apps to commit crimes is not new, and many apps have implemented safety features to protect users from potential harm. However, incidents like these serve as a reminder of the importance of being cautious when using dating apps and meeting up with strangers.
