Get ready to relive your queer college traumaāwith glitter, keg stands, and Megan Fox as your guardian angel. Overcompensating, a new A24-produced college comedy dropping on Prime Video May 15, stars internet darling Benito Skinner in a deeply chaotic, hyper-horny tale of a closeted frat bro whoās doing the absolute most to scream “Iām straight!”ābut ends up screaming something else entirely.
Skinner plays Benny, a not-so-straight freshman doing his best to blend into a world of red Solo cups, suppressed feelings, and bro-code disasters. To mask his sexuality, Benny throws himself into the hetero frat-boy fantasy, chugging beers, attempting to hook up with his girlfriend Carmen (Wally Baram), and fantasizing wildly about his hunky classmate Miles (Rish Shah). Spoiler alert: the straight act is not going well.
The trailer delivers everything youād expect from an unhinged Gen Z satire: a failed boner, fantasy-fueled daydreams, and Bowen Yang spitting into someoneās mouth. Thatās rightāYang and Matt Rogers make a guest appearance as ultra-confident queers who show Benny exactly what heās not ready for. āOpen your mouth, Iām going to spit in it,ā Yangās character commands, while Rogers barks at Benny to exit stage left. Itās not subtleāand thatās the point.
Enter Megan Fox, stage divine
And then thereās Megan Foxāplaying herself, obviouslyāemerging goddess-like from a poster to offer words of queer affirmation. āSo supportive and so so proud,ā she tells Benny, like a bisexual vision board come to life. Oh, and Charli XCX? She’s here too, screaming “What the f*** am I even doing here?” like the bratty deity we all worship. Yes, Mother.
Other stars piling onto the queer mayhem include Lukas Gage (who shares a kiss with Benny at a bar), Mary Beth Barone, Connie Britton, Kaia Gerber, and The White Lotus heartthrob Adam DiMarco. Itās camp with a capital C, but also wrapped in something more sincereāan attempt to showcase the tender, weird, and liberating moments of queer awakening in all their awkward glory.
Homoeroticism with a winkāand a purpose
Sure, Overcompensating is a sex-drenched satire with jokes about erections and spit. But beneath the glitter is a clear message: queerness doesnāt have to be tragic, coming out doesnāt have to be perfect, and college doesnāt have to be straight. For the LGBTQ+ community, especially young viewers navigating their own āovercompensations,ā this series serves a dose of visibility thatās loud, messy, and gloriously unfiltered.
Itās rare to see such a stacked cast lean fully into queer absurdity without winking at the audience. Instead, this trailer leans in with full drag-and-drop sincerity, giving LGBTQ+ characters center stageāand letting their stories be as chaotic and complex as everyone elseās.
So mark your calendar: Overcompensating drops all eight episodes May 15. And honey, if you ever faked a crush on your lab partner or screamed at a Pride poster for guidance, this show is for you.
