Congresswoman Quits Before Ethics Showdown

Drama in Congress as Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick resigns just before an ethics hearing. Is it a strategic retreat or a scandalous exit? 💔🏳️‍🌈

TL;DR

  • Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick resigned just before an Ethics hearing.
  • She faces serious allegations of ethics violations.
  • Her resignation avoids a tough vote for Democrats.
  • She claims the process is a ‘witch hunt.’
  • A criminal trial is set for February 2027.

In a dramatic twist that could rival any reality show, Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, the embattled Democrat from Florida, has thrown in the towel, resigning just moments before the House Ethics Committee was set to consider whether she should be expelled from Congress. Talk about a last-minute exit!

Last month, the Ethics panel found her guilty of a whopping 25 ethics violations, including allegations that she swiped federal relief funds and funneled some of that cash into her political campaign. Now, she’s facing a criminal trial that’s set to kick off in February 2027. Cherfilus-McCormick is not going down without a fight, though. “I will not stand by and pretend that this has been anything other than a witch hunt,” she declared in a statement posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “I choose to step away so that I can devote my time to fighting for my neighbors in Florida’s 20th district.”

Her resignation marks the third in a week, following two other lawmakers—Reps. Eric Swalwell and Tony Gonzales—who also resigned amid allegations of sexual misconduct. It seems Congress is having a bit of a meltdown, and Cherfilus-McCormick’s decision means her fellow Democrats won’t have to vote on whether to kick her out. Can you say ‘dodged a bullet’?

As the Ethics Committee Chairman Michael Guest opened the hearing focused on Cherfilus-McCormick, he noted that her resignation meant the committee had “lost jurisdiction on this matter.” But he defended the committee’s two-and-a-half-year investigation, stating, “This was not a rush to judgment, as some would claim.” Oh, honey, the drama is thick!

According to the Justice Department, Cherfilus-McCormick was indicted in November for allegedly stealing and laundering millions in FEMA funding. Her family’s healthcare company, Trinity Healthcare Services, had a contract with FEMA during the COVID-19 pandemic, but they reportedly received a $5 million overpayment that they never returned. Instead, they allegedly funneled it through multiple accounts to fund her successful 2022 special election campaign. And let’s not forget the $109,000 diamond ring she supposedly bought with that money. Talk about bling!

If convicted, she could be looking at over 50 years in prison. Her trial was initially set for this year, but a judge decided to delay it until after the midterms. In the meantime, her attorney has argued that the Ethics panel should have kept its nose out of her business, claiming that the public hearing could influence her criminal case and violate her rights.

The House Ethics panel began investigating Cherfilus-McCormick in 2023 after the nonpartisan Office of Congressional Ethics suggested they dig deeper. They reviewed over 33,000 documents and conducted 28 witness interviews before concluding that there was substantial reason to believe she violated House rules. Now, with her resignation, the Ethics Committee’s work seems to be in vain.

Historically, the House has only expelled members who have been convicted of crimes, but with the recent expulsion of Rep. George Santos, it seems the rules may be changing. Cherfilus-McCormick’s case is just another reminder that the political landscape is as unpredictable as ever, and the stakes are high. Stay tuned, because this saga is far from over!
