Corporate Pride’s New Workplace Revolution

Corporate Pride is evolving! 🌈✨ Point of Pride is bringing LGBTQ support directly to workplaces, ensuring everyone can be their authentic selves. Let’s celebrate inclusivity! 💖🤝

TL;DR

  • Corporate support for Pride is declining.
  • Point of Pride brings LGBTQ education to workplaces.
  • Employee Resource Groups are key for LGBTQ allyship.
  • Trans healthcare access is increasingly restricted.
  • Smaller companies are stepping up for LGBTQ employees.

After years of growing corporate support for Pride and LGBTQ+ initiatives, we find ourselves in a new era of uncertainty. Many big corporations are pulling back on their support for Pride events and LGBTQ+ programming, leaving a gaping hole in funding for LGBTQ+ organizations. But fear not, because nonprofit Point of Pride is here to shake things up in a fabulous way!

This trans-led nonprofit is marking Pride month by taking its mission straight into corporate workplaces. Forget the parades; it’s time for some real talk with Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). Point of Pride is all about providing education and practical tools to help create safer and more inclusive work environments for LGBTQ+ employees. And let’s be real, with the current political climate, the need for this kind of support has never been more urgent.

Jeffrey Main, the executive director of Point of Pride, shared that many LGBTQ+ employees, especially trans and nonbinary folks, are craving safer spaces at work. “They want to be in community with colleagues and help them understand the very real impacts that they are feeling,” he said. And who can blame them? Navigating a workplace can be tough enough without the added stress of feeling unsupported.

Point of Pride is stepping up to the plate, offering sessions focused on LGBTQ+ cultural competency, allyship, and the realities of trans healthcare. They’re not just raising awareness; they’re providing actionable steps for allies to take. “Here are the things you can say and do to be a better colleague to all people, but especially your queer teammates,” Main emphasized.

But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Some long-standing partnerships have crumbled under the weight of political backlash and the current anti-DEI movement. Main recounted, “We have had partnerships that have been years long where this year ERG facilitators have said, ‘Sorry, there are some internal concerns…’” It’s disheartening, but there’s a flicker of hope. Many ERG facilitators are committed to fighting the good fight internally, advocating for why these conversations matter now more than ever.

On the flip side, smaller companies are stepping up their game. “The retreat is real,” Main noted, “but smaller companies… are booking more engagements and really doubling down.” ERGs are proving to be a vital lifeline for LGBTQ+ employees, creating spaces where they can be authentic without fear of judgment.

Interestingly, the makeup of these ERGs is evolving. Main has noticed a surge in participation from family members and friends of trans and LGBTQ+ individuals. “Definitely in the last year or two… so much of the makeup of ERGs has become parents, spouses, friends and family members of trans people,” he shared. This shift is a testament to the growing awareness and support for the LGBTQ+ community.

Point of Pride isn’t asking companies to take a political stance; they’re simply encouraging empathy and curiosity about the concerns of LGBTQ+ employees. “The guidance I’m offering, like how to use more inclusive, gender-neutral language, is great for everybody in your workplace,” Main explained. It’s a win-win situation that fosters a more inclusive environment for all.

Since its inception, Point of Pride has supported over 30,000 people with direct aid for trans healthcare and wellness needs. With demand skyrocketing, they’re receiving 45 to 60 new requests daily for their programs. “We have to make some really difficult decisions because everybody deserves healthcare,” Main stated.

One exciting initiative is their speaking engagements program, which helps create change on a broader level. “These speaking engagements are really exciting for us because they allow us to create change on a broader level,” Main said. The honorariums from these engagements directly support their mission, allowing them to continue their vital work.
