Deta Hedman, a renowned darts player often called “The Heart of Darts,” has once again stirred controversy by withdrawing from a tournament after being drawn against a transgender player. This incident marks the second time in just three months that Hedman has refused to compete against a trans opponent.
On 27 July, Hedman announced her withdrawal from the women’s singles tournament organized by the United Kingdom Darts Association (UKDA). She had already defeated Patricia Roberts and Barbara Legge but chose to forfeit her match against Samantha Lewis, a transgender competitor. Hedman took to Facebook to explain her decision, emphasizing that the criticism she faced was more about her choice of words rather than the ethics of her decision.
In May, Hedman similarly withdrew from the Denmark Open when she was set to play against Noa-Lynn van Leuven, another transgender player. Hedman’s remarks at the time, which included misgendering van Leuven, were widely condemned. Despite the backlash, Hedman has consistently argued for the creation of an “open section” in darts, separate from men’s and women’s categories, as a solution to such conflicts.
The repercussions of Hedman’s actions have been felt beyond the darts community. Samantha Lewis, the player Hedman refused to compete against, recently shared her struggles with discrimination and mental health issues exacerbated by the exclusion she faces in sports. Lewis was also banned from entering the England Darts Open in Devon, learning of the ban through a direct message on social media.
Lewis described the emotional toll of the ongoing discrimination, stating, “Recently, there has been some politics within the community of transgender women playing in women’s sports. I’ve had a lot of slander and discrimination.” She revealed the severe impact on her mental health, mentioning that her mother was particularly concerned about her well-being.
This incident highlights the broader challenges faced by transgender athletes in competitive sports. The debate over their participation continues to evoke strong opinions and emotions, with calls for more inclusive solutions to ensure fair competition while respecting the identities of all players involved.
