Disney’s chief executive, Bob Iger, delivered a powerful rebuke during a second-quarter earnings call, targeted at the Florida government’s recent actions against the company. Although he refrained from naming Gov. Ron DeSantis or any particular Republican lawmakers, Iger’s comments were a clear indictment of the retaliatory measures being taken against the corporation.
The Battle with the State
Iger’s contention is that Disney’s autonomy has been under attack due to its stance on pending legislation. DeSantis and the Florida GOP’s animosity towards Disney escalated after the company voiced opposition to the state’s controversial Don’t Say Gay law. The CEO emphasized that Disney was merely exercising its right to free speech, and this was not an issue of special privileges or an imbalanced playing field.
A Matter of Retaliation?
The executive didn’t mince words while addressing DeSantis’s bill, aimed at undermining Disney’s control over the 39-square mile Reedy Creek Improvement District surrounding Disney World. He argued that Disney was one among approximately 2,000 special districts in Florida, all created to encourage investment and development. Disney’s contribution to the state, as per Iger, includes employing over 75,000 people and attracting millions of visitors. The company also paid over $1.1 billion in local and state taxes last year.
Disney’s Legal Action and Future Investments
Disney has subsequently initiated legal action against DeSantis, alleging a government-led retaliation campaign following their criticism of the Don’t Say Gay law. Despite these challenges, Iger shared that the company plans to invest an enormous 17 billion dollars in Florida over the next decade.
Political Fallout from the Feud
This clash between Disney and DeSantis has not gone unnoticed in political circles. Recent reports suggest the Governor’s standing within his party has taken a hit due to his ongoing feud with the entertainment giant. Many prominent Republican donors are reportedly questioning DeSantis’s viability as a future presidential candidate, which only heightens the tension in this unfolding drama.
