Everything Everywhere All at Once has swept the GALECA Film Awards, winning every category it was nominated in. The queer multiverse-spanning sci-fi family tale took home the trophies for Film of the Year, LGBTQ Film of the Year, Director of the Year, Screenplay of the Year, Film Performance (for Michelle Yeoh), Supporting Film Performance (for Ke Huy Quan), and Visually Striking Film of the Year. Stephanie Hsu also won the Rising Star Award, and Yeoh was honored with the Wilde Artist Award for her groundbreaking work in film, theater, and television.
This is the first time in GALECA’s history that a single film has won all of these awards, including Film, LGBTQ Film, Visually Striking Film, Director, Screenplay, Performance, and Supporting Performance. Previous films such as Moonlight and Carol have won multiple awards in the past, but Everything Everywhere’s complete sweep is unprecedented.
While Everything Everywhere wasn’t up for contention in a few categories, such as Documentary and Non-English Film, the film’s domination of the awards is a testament to its impact and quality. The GALECA LGBTQIA+ Film Trailblazer Award was also presented to Janelle Monáe, who was recognized for their outstanding work in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
As the film industry continues to evolve and expand, it’s heartening to see films like Everything Everywhere All at Once breaking boundaries and resonating with audiences and critics alike. The GALECA Film Awards serve as a celebration of the diversity and creativity of LGBTQ+ film and entertainment, and this year’s winners demonstrate the power of queer storytelling.
