Finland’s parliament, the Eduskunta, voted 113-69 in favor of new amendments that will make it easier for individuals to change their legally recognized gender.
The amendments will also abolish a provision that required transgender individuals to provide a medical certificate proving they were sterilized or infertile. The bill will allow individuals over the age of 18 in Finland to change their gender by self-declaration, without the need for a psychiatric assessment or a certificate on their ability to reproduce. The amendments are expected to take effect as soon as possible.
