Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) recently dodged a reporter’s question about his support for LGBTQ+ rights for adults, including gay marriage and sexual orientation. Instead of providing a clear answer, DeSantis chose to discuss the state’s law prohibiting conversations on LGBTQ+ topics in public schools up to 12th grade.
DeSantis stated that the law is in place to prevent students from being exposed to “inappropriate” curriculum, such as transgender ideology, and to keep teachers from probing their sexuality. He emphasized the importance of teaching math, science, reading, writing, and arithmetic, but failed to address the reporter’s question about adult LGBTQ+ rights.
Under the guise of “protecting children” from “sexualization,” DeSantis has supported several anti-LGBTQ+ policies. His relentless campaign against LGBTQ+ youth has led over half of LGBTQ+ parents in Florida to contemplate leaving the state, according to a Williams Institute survey. The study revealed that LGBTQ+ families feel less secure after the passage of the “Don’t Say Gay” law and DeSantis’ numerous attacks.
DeSantis, who is expected to run for president in 2024, has made demonizing people of color and queer individuals a cornerstone of his political career. He has clashed with Disney over his controversial “Don’t Say Gay” law, launched attacks against “woke indoctrination” in schools, and appointed handpicked administrators to control Florida’s education system. Moreover, his staff has frequently disparaged LGBTQ+ people and allies on social media, using offensive slurs and insinuating sexual abuse.
Donors and Supporters Abandoning DeSantis
Critics argue that DeSantis’ preoccupation with punishing Disney for opposing his law has caused some donors and supporters to distance themselves. As he appears to prioritize culture wars and personal pride over Floridians’ well-being, many are questioning whether DeSantis is genuinely committed to the state’s best interests.
