In a tragic incident that highlights the ongoing violence against transgender individuals, Florida police have arrested 25-year-old Anthony Quinn Peyton for the murder of 26-year-old London Price, a Black transgender woman. Price was brutally killed in front of her grandmother on October 23 in northwest Miami-Dade County.
LGBT Violence Continues in Florida
Price’s family revealed that Peyton was her former boyfriend, and they had recently reconciled, though their relationship had been tumultuous. London Price was known for her kindness and willingness to help others, qualities that may have played a role in her tragic fate.
Tori Cooper, director of community engagement for the Transgender Justice Initiative at the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), commented on the incident, emphasizing the urgent need to address violence targeting transgender and non-binary individuals. She highlighted the disproportionate impact on Black and Brown transgender women, citing Price’s murder as a distressing example.
Alarming Statistics on Transgender Violence
London Price’s death is part of a disturbing trend in the United States, where over 20 trans, nonbinary, or gender-nonconforming individuals have lost their lives to violence this year, with a majority being women of color. According to the HRC, nearly 70 percent of these victims were killed with firearms, and gun violence also accounted for a significant portion of deaths related to intimate partner violence.
Price’s family is seeking justice for her, describing her murderer as an “animal” due to the callous and brutal nature of her killing. The incident underscores the urgent need for greater awareness and action to combat violence against transgender and non-binary individuals, particularly those from marginalized communities.
A Call for Justice and Change
As the LGBTQ+ community mourns the loss of London Price, advocates and allies continue to call for an end to this alarming trend of violence. The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by transgender individuals and the urgent need for societal change to ensure their safety and well-being.
