Former US college swimmer Riley Gaines has come under intense criticism on social media for her comments claiming that trans women have an advantage in chess. Gaines, known for her previous anti-trans commentary on social media, faced backlash after expressing support for the International Chess Federation (FIDE) banning trans women from competing in women’s events.
Trans journalist Erin Reed, the fiancée of trans lawmaker Zooey Zephyr, called out Gaines in a post about FIDE’s policy. Reed questioned Gaines’s advocacy for banning trans women from women’s chess and received a response from Gaines, who stated, “Women’s opportunities are meant for women, full stop. Men shouldn’t be in women’s category in chess, pool, or any sport.”
Gaines’s comments drew criticism from various individuals, including trans comedian and model Stacy Cay. Cay pointed out that Gaines’s argument implies that cisgender women are “dumb,” adding that trans women are not men.
Gaines has a history of using social media to attack the transgender community. In August, FIDE published a policy that banned trans women from official female-only chess events until further analysis is conducted, which can last up to two years.
The controversy surrounding Gaines’s comments highlights ongoing debates about transgender inclusion and fairness in sports and competitive events.
