GOP Rep’s Homophobic Post Sparks Outrage

When will they learn? GOP Rep. Andy Ogles just deleted a homophobic post and blamed his staff. Talk about passing the buck! 🏳️‍🌈💔

TL;DR

  • Rep. Andy Ogles deleted a homophobic post.
  • He blamed a staffer for the comment.
  • Bipartisan backlash followed the incident.
  • Ogles has a history of inflammatory remarks.
  • Support for same-sex marriage among Republicans is declining.

In a spectacular display of political misstep, GOP Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee has found himself in hot water after deleting a homophobic comment from his official congressional X account. The timing couldn’t be worse, as Pride Month kicks off, and the backlash has been swift and fierce from both sides of the aisle.

The now-deleted post read, “Homosexuality has no place in America. Happy Nuclear Family Month.” Ogles, in a desperate attempt to save face, later claimed that the offensive message was posted by a member of his communications team. “The post was stupid, hurtful and a complete distraction from my America First focus. The employee has been reprimanded,” he said, trying to distance himself from the fallout.

But the damage was done, and the condemnation came pouring in. Fellow Republican Rep. Mike Lawler from New York didn’t hold back, calling Ogles’ statement “idiotic.” He reminded Ogles that, “Homosexuality exists. In America. In fact Andy, you have family, friends, neighbors, colleagues and constituents who are gay and lesbian. It doesn’t make them less than or somehow unworthy of being an American.” Ouch!

Lawler didn’t stop there. He took to X again to label the post “offensive,” adding that it was “pretty clear that it was f—ing stupid.” And he’s not alone in his criticism. Sen. Ted Cruz, who is usually not one to shy away from inflammatory rhetoric, weighed in, stating, “For all of recorded history, homosexuals have been part of humanity.” He added, “I think the behavior of consenting adults is their business.” Wow, when Ted Cruz is the voice of reason, you know things have gone awry.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise also chimed in, calling the post “inappropriate” and emphasizing that it should have never been posted in the first place. “He retracted it,” Scalise noted, adding that Ogles himself said he didn’t post it. “It’s reprehensible.” Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson remained silent, not offering any immediate comments on the debacle.

Democrats were quick to pounce on the opportunity to slam Ogles. Rep. Katherine Clark from Massachusetts declared, “Bigots like Andy Ogles have no place in America.” And Rep. Shri Thanedar from Michigan didn’t hold back either, labeling the comment “horrific and disgusting,” adding, “The LGBTQI+ community makes America great, unlike bigots like you.” Talk about a mic drop!

This isn’t the first time Ogles has stirred controversy. Earlier this year, he made headlines for declaring that “Muslims don’t belong in American society,” which also drew bipartisan backlash. It seems Ogles has a knack for making enemies across the political spectrum.

In a troubling trend, polling indicates that support for same-sex marriage among Republicans has taken a nosedive. In 2021, 55% of Republicans supported recognizing marriages between same-sex couples, but by 2026, that number plummeted to just 37%. With attitudes like Ogles’, it’s no wonder the LGBTQ community continues to face challenges in the political arena.

As Pride Month unfolds, it’s essential to remember that the fight for LGBTQ rights is far from over, and comments like Ogles’ only serve to highlight the ongoing struggle against bigotry and hate. Let’s hope this serves as a wake-up call for those who still cling to outdated views. The future is bright, and it’s time to embrace love in all its forms.
