Netflix has announced that the new season of the popular LGBTQ+ coming-of-age series, Heartstopper, will premiere on August 3. The show, based on Alice Oseman’s graphic novel series of the same name, follows the lives of a group of teenagers as they navigate through the ups and downs of life, love, and friendship.
The new season will see Nick and Charlie exploring their new relationship, while the rest of the squad faces unforeseen challenges. With exams on the horizon, a school trip to Paris, and a prom to plan, the group has a lot to juggle as they continue their journey of self-discovery.
While details surrounding the new season are scarce, fans can get a taste of what’s to come by reading Alice Oseman’s graphic novel series, especially Volume 3. “Season 2 is based on Volume 3,” Oseman said. “So we had a good foundation. But there’s not enough in the book to take a whole season of TV, so there had to be a lot of creation of new stuff.”
The show has received critical acclaim for its honest portrayal of queer joy and discovery, and the new season is sure to be just as heartwarming. The entire cast of Season One will be returning for Season Two, along with some fresh faces.
Executive producer Patrick Walters praised the cast for their bond, saying, “it’s really gorgeous because they’re such a bonded gang in the comic and in the scripts that [Alice] wrote. And then you have these actors who are also equally bonded and love each other so much. It’s an energy of friendship on set, whenever the actors are there and a whole big gang. It’s really nice.”
Heartstopper has become a cultural phenomenon, with the graphic novel series selling over 8 million copies and being published in 35 countries worldwide. The show has also received critical acclaim, with Season One earning a 100% Critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
With the premiere of Season Two just a few months away, fans of the show can look forward to another heartwarming and honest portrayal of queer love and discovery.
