In a heartfelt tribute to the memory of Lauri ‘Lauri’ Ann Carleton, the 66-year-old owner of the clothing store Mag.Pi, a personalized rainbow flag has been created to honor her legacy. Tragically killed in a horrifying incident stemming from a dispute over a Pride flag displayed outside her Lake Arrowhead store, Lauri Carleton’s dedication to love, equality, and human rights continues to inspire.
The incident took a tragic turn on 18 August when Lauri Carleton was shot and killed within her store. She had adamantly refused to remove the Pride flag from her display, prompting a barrage of homophobic slurs from the assailant, 27-year-old Travis Ikeguchi. The attacker, who had a history of sharing anti-LGBTQ+, antisemitic, and far-right views on social media, was subsequently shot dead by the police at the scene.
To commemorate Lauri Carleton’s unwavering advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community, Flags for Good and the Los Angeles LGBT Center have joined forces to create a special Pride flag. The 3×5 inch Magpie Pride flag features an emblem of a magpie, a nod to Carleton’s store name, set against the backdrop of a Pride Progress flag. Each purchase of this flag contributes to the Lake Arrowhead LGBTQ+ Fund, supporting local and inclusive community initiatives in honor of Lauri’s courageous spirit.
Amidst the tragedy, the local community has rallied to express their grief and solidarity. The Lake Arrowhead LGBTQ+ group hailed Lauri Carleton as a “remarkable” individual and a “pillar in our community,” underscoring her indomitable support for inclusivity. Hollywood director Paul Feig emphasized the importance of tolerance and love in the face of tragedy, urging an end to intolerance against the LGBTQ+ community. Renowned figures like actor Allison Janney and trans politician Lisa Middleton echoed the sentiment, condemning the senseless act of violence while advocating for unity against hate and discrimination.
By commemorating Lauri Carleton’s legacy, we are reminded of the profound impact individuals can have in fostering an inclusive society. Her tragic passing has galvanized a renewed commitment to promoting love and equality, with her story serving as a beacon of hope for a better future. The Pride flag created in her honor stands as a testament to her enduring legacy and the unwavering determination of the LGBTQ+ community and its allies.
