In Rome, LGBTQ artists are celebrating the ancient Roman Empress Poppae’s infamous milk bath ritual through a steamy photo series. The exhibit, entitled Eros Capitale, recently concluded its run at the Domiziano Stadium archeological site under the Piazza Navona in Rome, leaving visitors in awe of the beauty and sensuality captured in the photographs.
Contributing photographer Roberto Chiovitti’s homage to Poppae’s milk bath was a standout display in the exhibit, originally published in the LGBTQ Italian publication, QMagazine. The photos feature models Andrei K. and Raphael Say submerged in milk, evoking the luxurious and sensual ritual practiced by Poppae. The milk bath was a symbol of beauty, youth, and fertility in ancient Rome, and Poppae was known for her frequent indulgence in the practice.

Chiovitti’s photographs capture the sensual and alluring nature of the milk bath, while also celebrating the LGBTQ community and their contributions to art. The exhibit also featured the work of make-up artist Rossano De Cesaris, who created stunning looks for the models that complemented the steamy milk bath setting. The combination of Chiovitti’s photography and De Cesaris’s make-up artistry created a mesmerizing display of sensuality and beauty that left visitors enchanted.
Eros Capitale is a celebration of the enduring power of ancient rituals and their continued influence on contemporary culture. Through the lens of LGBTQ artists, the exhibit brings to life the seductive and captivating nature of the milk bath ritual, while also showcasing the creativity and talent of the LGBTQ community in Rome.
