In a recent incident that shed light on the ongoing struggles faced by the LGBTQ community, a pub gathering in the Mar Mikhael region of Lebanon turned into a scene of intolerance and discrimination. The Christian militia known as the Junoud al-Rab stormed the venue upon learning that a gay party was taking place. Abruptly halting the celebration, one attacker was caught on video stating, “Promoting homosexuality is forbidden in the land of God.”
The video circulated online, sparking outrage as it revealed the deeply-rooted prejudices that persist in the country. A Lebanese activist pointed out, “They claim to be the Christian version of Hezbollah, but who gave them the authority to decide what is acceptable? Where are the security forces safeguarding citizens and their rights?”
This incident comes on the heels of rising tensions between conservative factions and the LGBTQ community. The attack, carried out by the Christian militia, resulted in the interruption of a drag show, where individuals adorned in glamorous outfits and makeup took the stage. Despite the adversity, members of the LGBTQ community remained resilient. “We’re here, and no one will silence us,” declared one participant. “But sometimes, to continue doing what we do, we need to be strategic. Unfortunately, we had to end the show prematurely.”
Such incidents have elicited concerns about the growing division within Lebanese society. Hezbollah’s Secretary-General, Hassan Nasrallah, referred to the LGBTQ community as a “real danger” in a speech in July. He made controversial remarks, suggesting, “Even if they do it once, the homosexuals should be killed.” Nasrallah also blamed non-governmental educational institutions for promoting “homosexual relationships among children.”
As Lebanon grapples with these divisive issues, the incident serves as a reminder of the challenges that the LGBTQ community faces and the urgent need for social acceptance and tolerance.
