Korbin Albert Booed at Wembley Amid LGBTQ+ Controversy

USWNT’s Korbin Albert faces boos at Wembley after past anti-LGBTQ+ posts resurface. Coach Emma Hayes addresses the backlash. #LGBTQ #Football #USWNT

The US Women’s National Team midfielder Korbin Albert faced a wave of boos from sections of the 78,000-strong crowd at Wembley during a match against England. The backlash stemmed from Albert’s controversial social media activity earlier this year, including an anti-LGBTQ+ post and support for a comment mocking an injury sustained by Megan Rapinoe. Though Albert apologized publicly in March, the incident has left a lingering impact.

USWNT coach Emma Hayes, in her first major test of public scrutiny since taking over the role, acknowledged the fans’ reaction. “I understand the booing,” Hayes said. “Everyone is entitled to their opinion. As a coach, my focus is on building an inclusive and respectful environment, but I cannot control what happens outside of it.”

Albert has been a key player for the USWNT, contributing to their Olympic gold win, but her actions have left some fans questioning her commitment to the values of inclusion championed by the team. Hayes emphasized that the young player has been working on personal growth but maintained that addressing the controversy publicly is Albert’s responsibility. “There have been opportunities for her to speak, and when the moment comes, it’s for her to address,” Hayes added.

The incident highlights the challenges faced by sports teams in balancing inclusivity and navigating controversies involving their players. Captains from both teams, Lindsey Horan and Leah Williamson, wore rainbow armbands during the match, reaffirming the football world’s support for LGBTQ+ inclusion under the Rainbow Laces campaign.

Albert’s apology earlier this year stated, “Liking and sharing posts that are offensive, insensitive, and hurtful was immature and disrespectful, which was never my intent.” Yet, for many fans, her actions remain a sore point, underscoring the growing demand for accountability in sports beyond the pitch.
