A Finnish sanitary product manufacturer, Vuokkoset, is facing online backlash for launching a tampon specifically aimed at trans men and non-binary individuals. The product, aptly named the “Tampon for Men,” was introduced during Transgender Awareness Week to address gender dysphoria related to menstruation and challenge societal perceptions of periods.
According to the brand’s press release, research indicates that 93 percent of trans men experience menstrual-related gender dysphoria. The tampon comes in a navy blue box, cleverly designed to convey “For menstruation” when read together with “for men” on the other side. Additionally, Vuokkoset is working on an entirely gender-neutral product.
Dakota Robin, the face of the campaign and DEI consultant, emphasized the importance of recognizing the diversity of menstruating individuals and the positive impact of changing attitudes and perspectives.
Despite the campaign’s inclusive intent, it has faced vulgar criticism from anti-trans trolls online. Some comments misgendered and dismissed trans men’s experiences with periods, perpetuating discrimination against gender minorities.
However, amid the negativity, there were supportive comments praising the product and its message. Many applauded the campaign’s courage and packaging design, while others condemned transphobic remarks.
This is not the first time that period products have been aimed at individuals other than women. Earlier in the year, trans masc model Oscar McGregor collaborated with Modibodi on an All Gender Collection, including period briefs designed to accommodate packers.
Vuokkoset’s “Tampon for Men” will initially be available as a limited edition in Finland, with broader distribution starting in early 2024. Proceeds from the product will be donated to Trasek ry, an organization focused on gender diversity and sexual health.
