Landmarks across Knowsley were adorned with vibrant rainbow colors as the community gathered to mark the 15th anniversary of the tragic death of Michael Causer, a young trainee hairdresser whose life was cut short in a horrific act of violence at a house party. Mr. Causer’s family firmly believes that the murder was driven by hate, although the judge presiding over the case dismissed the possibility of homophobia as a motive during the sentencing of the 18-year-old perpetrator.
Michael Causer’s legacy continues to inspire the fight against hate crime, and his family established the Michael Causer Foundation, which works tirelessly to support young LGBTQ individuals in the North-West England region. Partnering with the local charity One Knowsley, the foundation commemorated this solemn occasion with a series of events across the borough.
The commemorative vigil brought together Mr. Causer’s family, local residents, and dignitaries, shining a spotlight on the ongoing struggle against hate crime. Iconic sites like the Greystone Bridge over the M62 and the Archway Road railway bridge were brilliantly lit in rainbow colors, serving as poignant symbols of unity and remembrance. Additionally, a newly dedicated pavilion in the courtyard of One Knowsley’s headquarters now stands as a tribute to Mr. Causer’s enduring legacy.
Chairman of the foundation’s trustees, Steve Macfarlane, expressed the significance of holding the vigil in Mr. Causer’s home borough, emphasizing that it honored not only his memory but also served as a poignant reminder of all victims of hate crime. “Fifteen years on, and the fight against hate crime continues,” he remarked, calling for a united community mission to foster a world free from fear, prejudice, and violence.
Racheal Jones, CEO of One Knowsley, underscored the importance of the event, stating that it marked the homecoming of Michael Causer’s legacy and the initiation of a new conversation surrounding hate crime in Knowsley. With his name as a rallying point, the community aims to create a powerful response and drive positive change, promoting diversity and acceptance.
As the illuminating rainbow colors bathe the landmarks, they serve as a beacon of hope and a testament to the resilience of a community that stands together against hate and bigotry.
