Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has made a significant move by announcing the members of a newly formed commission dedicated to LGBTQ+ matters. Established through Executive Order 2023-5, this commission, working alongside the Department of Labor and Education Opportunity, is tasked with ensuring that government practices cater to the diverse needs of the LGBTQ+ community. This initiative represents a proactive step in making governmental decisions more inclusive and responsive to LGBTQ+ issues.
The commission’s composition is designed to mirror the varied socioeconomic, racial, ethnic, cultural, gender identity, sexual orientation, occupational, political, and geographic diversity of Michigan. This approach ensures a wide range of perspectives and experiences are considered in advising the governor on LGBTQ+ related affairs. Raúl Hernández Guzmán, an academic and LGBTQ+ advocate with two decades of residency in Michigan, will serve as the commission’s first administrator, bringing a wealth of experience and understanding to the role.
Michigan’s efforts in supporting the LGBTQ+ community have been lauded by advocates, recognizing the state’s commitment to inclusive policies, such as incorporating protections for sexual orientation and gender identity in the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act and taking a stand against conversion therapy. The establishment of the state’s first LGBTQ+ commission is seen as another significant step in fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all residents of Michigan.
A Diverse Range of Expertise
The commission comprises individuals from various backgrounds, including educators, medical providers serving the LGBTQ+ community, tribal members, residents of rural areas, parents of LGBTQ+ children, first responders, and advocates. This diverse representation ensures that the commission can effectively address the wide-ranging issues and challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in Michigan. The members, who began their four-year term on November 30, 2023, will serve until November 29, 2027, contributing to the state’s ongoing efforts in promoting equality and inclusivity.
