Drag performer and comedian Murray Hill is set to host the pioneering “King of Drag,” the first-ever drag king competition series, set to premiere in spring 2025 on the LGBTQ-focused streaming platform Revry. The six-episode series will spotlight drag kings—performers who have long existed in the shadows of their more mainstream drag queen counterparts—and aims to celebrate their unique artistry, comedy, and social commentary.
“King of Drag,” created by Damian Pelliccione and Christopher J. Rodriguez, will feature eight drag king performers competing for the coveted title. Each episode will dive into the backstories, ambitions, and creative processes of these performers, shedding light on their personal journeys and struggles. Unlike other drag competition shows, this series will emphasize the distinct aspects of drag king culture, from exaggerated masculinity to biting humor and societal reflection.
Hill, a fixture in New York City’s cabaret and drag scene, expressed enthusiasm about the long-overdue recognition for drag kings. “This vibrant community deserves to be in the spotlight, and I’ll be their biggest hype man,” Hill said. Known for breaking barriers in the entertainment industry, Hill’s previous work hosting “Drag Me to Dinner” further cemented his role as a trailblazer for drag king visibility.
The significance of this series extends beyond entertainment; it marks a critical moment for LGBTQ representation. Drag kings—often cisgender women, non-binary individuals, and trans masc performers—have historically faced limited visibility compared to their drag queen counterparts. “King of Drag” seeks to change that by providing a stage for underrepresented voices, fostering acceptance, and challenging societal norms about masculinity and gender performance.
With streaming platforms like Revry offering a dedicated space for diverse voices, shows like “King of Drag” highlight the growing importance of inclusive media. As visibility expands, so does the opportunity for authentic stories to be told—stories that resonate deeply within and beyond the LGBTQ community.
