In the wake of Nancy Kelley’s departure as CEO of Stonewall, Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ charity, her successor is set to embark on a challenging journey to guide the organization through turbulent times. With LGBTQ+ rights and their advocates under attack, the next leader faces the daunting task of defending and advancing the cause. Kelley, who helmed Stonewall for three years, announced her resignation without specifying the reason behind her departure.
Despite expressing pride in Stonewall’s accomplishments, Kelley acknowledged that the journey had not always been smooth sailing. The charity has been subjected to unprecedented attacks in the press, often with the tacit support of government representatives. Nevertheless, she highlighted the privilege of working for Stonewall.
Stonewall, known for its advocacy of LGBTQ+ rights in the UK, has faced significant challenges in recent years. Labelled “controversial” and even “extremist” for its trans-inclusive stance, the organization has witnessed several prominent entities withdraw from its workplace inclusion scheme, Diversity Champions. Among those that cut ties with Stonewall are the BBC, the Cabinet Office, University College London, and broadcasting regulator Ofcom.
In 2021, Stonewall found itself defending against what it deemed a coordinated attack from the British media. Allegations were made that the charity had provided “potentially illegal” advice regarding workplace transgender discrimination protections. However, Stonewall refuted these claims, emphasizing that the legality of its guidance had been upheld in a High Court hearing.
The next CEO of Stonewall will face a challenging landscape, as trans individuals in the UK encounter escalating threats to their rights and well-being. Hate crimes have risen steadily, with instances of death threats, abuse, and protests targeting drag performances. Moreover, the current UK government has shown resistance to meaningful change for the queer community and has adopted anti-trans rhetoric. As a result, the country has seen a decline in its ranking for LGBTQ+ rights.
The upcoming leader of Stonewall must address these pressing issues. They will be tasked with campaigning for a comprehensive ban on conversion therapy and advocating for the recognition of non-binary individuals on legal documents. Additionally, they will need to confront the anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric perpetuated by influential voices. The role will require courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the community, following in the footsteps of Nancy Kelley’s trailblazing tenure at Stonewall.
