Cam Thomas, a shooting guard for the Brooklyn Nets, has apologized for making an antigay comment after the Nets’ victory against the Chicago Bulls on Thursday night. However, he is still facing a fine of $40,000. ESPN reports that Thomas and Spencer Dinwiddie, who was recently traded to the Nets from the Dallas Mavericks, were being interviewed by TNT’s Jared Greenberg after the game at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. When Greenberg asked Thomas about Dinwiddie’s “best-looking” remark, Thomas responded by saying, “We already had good-looking guys, no homo.”
Thomas later tweeted an apology, stating that he was being playful and did not intend to offend anyone. However, the NBA has still imposed a fine on him. In a press release on Friday, the NBA stated that Thomas “has been fined $40,000 for using derogatory and disparaging language during a live television interview.”
Homophobic comments are not uncommon in the NBA, and several players have been fined over the years for using derogatory language. According to Outsports, while Thomas’ apology is better than most, his “no homo” comment was still offensive. It remains to be seen if the incident will affect Thomas’ career with the Brooklyn Nets.
