In recognition of National LGBTQ+ History Month, a group of cross-party Members of Parliament (MPs) gathered in the House of Commons on February 2 to call for equality for LGBTQ+ individuals in the UK.
Labour MP for Wallasey, Dame Angela Eagle, spoke about the growing attack on trans rights, which are being pitted against the rights of cisgender women. “If we start losing LGBT rights, women’s rights will not be far behind,” she stated, referring to the record high of hate crimes in England and Wales, with a 56% increase in anti-trans incidents in the past year.
Conservative MP for Carshalton and Wallington, Elliot Colburn, acknowledged the British public’s compassion for the trans community and urged fellow MPs to be mindful when discussing trans issues. He emphasized the significance of National LGBTQ+ History Month, not only to reflect on the past but to send a message to the LGBTQ+ community that they are heard and valid.
