Placebo is back, and they’re not just making music; they’re making history. As the iconic band graces the cover of Attitude magazine, they’re reflecting on three decades of fearless representation in the LGBTQ community. Founding members Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal are gearing up to accept the Pride Icon Award at the 2026 PEUGEOT Attitude PRIDE Awards Europe, and let’s just say, they’re ready to spill some serious tea.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly 30 years since their hit song ‘Nancy Boy’ burst onto the scene, challenging norms and paving the way for countless queer artists. “After maybe the fourth or fifth time a stranger called me a ‘Nancy boy’ in a pub, I thought, ‘Fuck it. I’m going to reclaim all these insults,’” Molko recalls. “I’m going to write a song about how a bisexual person can have so much more fun than you. Has so many more options than you. So much more freedom than you.” Talk about turning the tables!

For many in the queer community, ‘Nancy Boy’ was more than just a catchy tune; it was a lifeline. It opened the door to conversations about sexuality, gender, and identity that were often left unspoken. “For a lot of queer people, ‘Nancy Boy’ was a gateway drug not just to Placebo, but to the possibility that there might be another way to be,” Molko explains. The song has evolved into a powerful protest anthem, especially in countries where LGBTQ+ rights are still under threat.

As they prepare to receive their award on July 3rd at The Chancery Rosewood in London, Molko expresses gratitude for the recognition. “To receive this recognition for me is really very moving. It means we’ve done some good in this world,” he says. Olsdal adds succinctly, “We never hid.” And that’s exactly the energy we love to see.

What’s the message for today’s youth? Molko has some wise words: “There are far more people out there like you, going through what you’re going through, than you could ever imagine. Find your tribe. Find your community. And never let anybody stop you from being yourself.” Olsdal chimes in, “And turn it up loud. Loud and proud. Nobody needs to hide. You’re not alone.”

Placebo’s journey is a testament to the power of music as a force for change and representation. Their full interview will appear in issue 371 of Attitude magazine, on sale in print and digital on July 3rd. So, mark your calendars and get ready to celebrate a band that has not only rocked our world but has also stood tall for the LGBTQ community.
