Pride Leaders Demand Hospital Boycott

Trans rights are human rights! 🏳️‍⚧️✨ NYC Pride must stand with trans youth and kick out hospitals that abandon them. #FightBack

TL;DR

  • Trans advocates demand NYC Pride boycott hospitals abandoning trans youth care.
  • NYU Langone and Mount Sinai targeted for ending gender-affirming services.
  • Prominent figures like Bowen Yang support the petition.
  • The call for action is against Trump administration pressures.
  • Pride must stand with trans youth and their families.

In a bold move that’s shaking up the NYC Pride scene, transgender advocates and a slew of past and present grand marshals are calling for a hospital boycott. They want Heritage of Pride to kick out any hospital that has turned its back on trans youth, particularly NYU Langone Health and Mount Sinai. The demand comes as these hospitals have been accused of abandoning gender-affirming care for minors, a move that has many in the community fuming.

Organized by the Gender Liberation Movement, a letter has been sent out urging NYC Pride to bar any medical institution that has caved to the Trump administration’s relentless efforts to dismantle essential gender-affirming care. The letter also highlights hospitals that have cooperated with the Justice Department’s attempts to access sensitive patient records of transgender minors. Talk about a betrayal!

“Across the country, transgender youth and their families are facing an unprecedented assault on their rights, dignity, and access to healthcare,” the letter states. It’s hard to argue with that when you see institutions like NYU Langone and Mount Sinai capitulating to political pressure while other hospitals stand firm in their commitment to care.

Among the supporters of this initiative are some big names in the LGBTQ community, including NYC Pride grand marshals like Bowen Yang, Dominique Jackson, and Peppermint. They’re not just throwing their names on a petition; they’re making a statement that trans rights are non-negotiable. Former grand marshals like Raquel Willis and Jazz Jennings are also on board, emphasizing the importance of standing up for the most vulnerable members of our community.

Raquel Willis, co-founder of the Gender Liberation Movement, put it plainly: “Each year, we are tested against the values of our ancestors and transcestors during Pride. This year, when our vulnerable next generation of transgender and nonbinary youth are being denied care, NYC Pride must hold the line and disallow hospitals that have unlawfully upheld hateful policies.”

The urgency of the situation is palpable, especially as major hospital systems across the nation, including NYU Langone and Mount Sinai, have curtailed programs aimed at serving transgender minors. Just last month, NYU Langone was criminally subpoenaed for sensitive medical records of patients who received gender-affirming care as minors. The pressure is mounting, and advocates are urging these hospitals to resist cooperating with such subpoenas.

As the clock ticks down to the NYC Pride march on June 28, the Gender Liberation Movement is calling for Heritage of Pride to take a definitive stand. “NYC Pride has an opportunity to take a stand with trans youth and their families and send a message to the Trump administration that the attacks will not stand in New York,” the petition asserts.

It’s time for NYC Pride to show that their values extend beyond just rainbow flags and parades. They have a chance to demonstrate that they stand firmly with transgender youth and families fighting for their right to receive care. Will they rise to the occasion, or will they let politics dictate the future of Pride? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: the community is watching.
