As of recent counts, a record-breaking 238 out LGBTQ+ candidates have won their elections, surpassing the 185 victors of the 2021 odd-year election. This achievement, hailed as a “Rainbow Wave,” represents a substantial leap forward in LGBTQ+ representation in public office.

The LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, a pivotal organization in supporting LGBTQ+ political candidates, is closely monitoring six more races, with four candidates advancing to runoff elections and five set to appear on Utah’s general election ballot. Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of the LGBTQ Victory Fund, celebrated these victories as a clear message against the use of LGBTQ+ issues as political wedges, emphasizing the community’s desire for a government focused on improving lives rather than promoting discrimination.

Election Trends and Success Rates

The 2023 elections saw remarkable trends: 68% of LGBTQ+ school board candidates won their races, and the number of LGBTQ+ legislators in states holding elections rose from 7 to 12. Additionally, LGBTQ+ women had a 56% success rate in their races, while out men had a 51% success rate. Overall, LGBTQ+ candidates had a 50.85% success rate, with those endorsed by the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund achieving a notable 71% success rate, demonstrating the effectiveness of targeted support and advocacy.

Historic Milestones and Achievements

Several historic milestones were achieved in these elections. Fabian Nelson became Mississippi’s first out LGBTQ+ legislator, Rue Landau was elected as Philadelphia’s first out LGBTQ+ City Council member, and all nine LGBTQ+ Victory Fund candidates for the Virginia General Assembly won their races. Danica Roem’s victory is particularly noteworthy, as she will become the first out transgender state senator in the South.
