In a recent investigation by CNN’s KFile, it has come to light that Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson has a concerning history of anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and actions. Despite his claims of being a Christian who loves all people, his past statements and associations paint a different picture.
Mike Johnson’s Pseudohistorical Theory on Homosexuality and the Roman Empire
Mike Johnson once credited the fall of the Roman Empire to homosexuality, a theory that has been widely debunked by historians. In an audio clip uncovered by KFile, Johnson suggested that the fall of Rome could be attributed, in part, to “the rampant homosexual behavior that was condoned by the society.” This statement reflects his long-standing bias against the LGBTQ+ community.
Involvement with Exodus International and Conversion Therapy
Before entering politics, Johnson worked as a legal advisor for Exodus International, a controversial organization that promoted conversion therapy programs for LGBTQ+ individuals through religious and counseling methods. This practice, widely discredited and condemned, aimed to change an individual’s sexual orientation. Johnson also collaborated with Exodus to promote an anti-gay event called the “Day of Truth,” which aimed to counter the “Day of Silence,” an event highlighting LGBTQ+ targeted bullying.
Anti-Gay Advocacy with Alliance Defending Freedom
Johnson’s association with the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), designated as a hate group by the SPLC, raised further concerns. He authored opposition to a Supreme Court ruling that overturned the criminalization of homosexual activity between consenting adults in the early 2000s. In a 2004 column, he described homosexuality as “inherently unnatural” and “ultimately harmful and costly for everyone.” Johnson’s extreme views extended to suggesting that accepting homosexuality would open the door for “every deviant group.”
Broader Conservative Stances
In addition to his anti-LGBTQ+ stance, Mike Johnson has shown support for a national abortion ban, advocated for covenant marriages with stricter divorce requirements, and supported former President Trump’s 2017 executive order to ban immigration from seven majority Muslim countries. His controversial history raises questions about the inclusivity of his political agenda.
Mike Johnson’s past remarks and affiliations reflect a pattern of bias against the LGBTQ+ community, casting doubt on his ability to represent all constituents fairly. As Speaker of the House, his positions on these issues will undoubtedly be a subject of concern and scrutiny for those advocating for LGBTQ+ rights and equality.
