Nicola Sturgeon has announced her resignation from her role as First Minister of Scotland. She has been a prominent supporter of LGBT rights, leading the Scottish National Party since 2014. Sturgeon oversaw the passing of the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill, making it simpler for trans people to access a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC).
The Bill was vetoed by the UK government in December 2022, and Sturgeon announced plans to challenge the decision in court. Sturgeon has also vowed to tackle transphobia within the SNP after swathes of young members quit the party in 2021.
In addition, Sturgeon has been vocal in her support for ending conversion therapy and has promised to bring forward legislation in Scotland. It remains to be seen how her successor will continue to advocate for these important issues.
As a proud ally of the LGBT community, Nicola Sturgeon has been an inspiration to many, and her legacy in this area will continue to inspire progress towards equality and acceptance.
