The Greek capital of Athens is known for its rich history and iconic sites, but for the LGBTQ+ community, it can be a place where traditional values and norms still hold strong. Elska Magazine, a publication dedicated to sharing the stories and bodies of ordinary men from LGBTQ+ communities around the world, highlighted the gay men of Athens in its November issue.
According to Liam Campbell, editor and chief photographer of Elska Magazine, finding participants for the Athens issue was a challenge due to the hesitation and worries of many gay men about revealing too much and who might find out about their participation. However, despite initial reluctance, the gay men of Athens ultimately decided to let down their guard and share their truths with the magazine.
“Something quite magical happened once these men stepped in front of our camera,” Campbell said. “It seemed that they were able to tap into some of that ‘island spirit’ and let go. Some of that anxiety remained, but alongside came a desire to challenge social norms and proudly share the most vulnerable, queer, and beautiful aspects of themselves.”
