Streeting Faces Backlash from LGBTQ+ Youth

Wes Streeting is getting called out! 🎤 LGBTQ+ youth organizations demand he stop siding with anti-trans campaigners. It’s time to listen! 🌈✊

TL;DR

  • Wes Streeting urged to support trans youth
  • 10 LGBTQ+ organizations sign letter
  • Call for gender-affirming care access
  • Concerns over NHS restrictions
  • Need for compassionate approach

Wes Streeting, the Health Secretary, has found himself in hot water as ten LGBTQ+ youth organizations have banded together to urge him to stop siding with anti-trans campaigners. The letter, which has been signed by prominent groups such as TransActual and Mermaids, calls for Streeting to listen to the voices of trans youngsters and to lift the existing restrictions on gender-affirming care.

The organizations are not mincing words. They are demanding that the NHS provides timely and holistic care to all trans individuals, based on informed consent. This plea comes on the heels of Streeting’s decision to pause the PATHWAYS puberty blockers trial and halt new prescriptions of gender-affirming hormones for 16 and 17-year-olds. The updated guidance for GPs has also restricted access to these crucial treatments, leaving many young people in limbo.

In their letter, the signatories express deep concern over the potential harm caused by the current approach. They state, “As organizations that work with and support trans young people, we are deeply concerned about the impact of your approach. We can work together to prevent further harm by taking a more careful, compassionate, and supportive approach. But the extreme lack of caution being shown by the Government and NHS England through its continued assault on the availability of gender-affirming care risks causing serious long-term damage to a generation of trans youth.”

The letter serves as a clarion call for change, urging Streeting to reconsider his stance and prioritize the well-being of trans youth over political pressures. The organizations involved include The International LGBTQI Youth and Student Organisation (IGLYO), The Kite Trust, Gendered Intelligence, Proud2Be, FFLAG, SAGE Staffordshire, The Proud Trust, and Mosaic LGBT+ Young Person’s Trust.

As the debate around trans rights continues to heat up, it’s clear that the voices of LGBTQ+ youth must not be ignored. Their futures depend on access to necessary healthcare and support, and it’s time for leaders like Wes Streeting to step up and listen. The message is clear: trans rights are human rights, and the fight for equality must go on.
