Teacher Defies Court Orders Over Pronouns, Remains in Prison

Teacher Enoch Burke’s refusal to use correct pronouns keeps him behind bars. #EnochBurke #Pronouns #LGBTQ

Enoch Burke, an Evangelical Christian teacher, finds himself confined to Mountjoy Prison in Dublin, Ireland, as he steadfastly refuses to comply with a court-issued injunction. This injunction, stemming from his alleged confrontation with the head teacher at Wilson’s Hospital School in County Westmeath, demanded that he stay away from the school premises and address transgender students with their correct pronouns. Despite the court’s offer of release in exchange for compliance, Burke remains resolute in his refusal, citing his religious beliefs and opposition to what he terms “transgenderism.”

A Dispute Rooted in Pronouns

Burke’s legal troubles originated not from his reluctance to use the appropriate pronouns but from his persistent presence on the school campus despite suspension. The school board, claiming that Burke’s actions caused significant disruptions for both staff and students, led to his incarceration.

A Controversial Standoff

During the recent court proceedings, characterized by interruptions from Burke’s family members, Burke accused the Westmeath school and its legal representatives of obstructing justice by withholding minutes from the school board meetings that resulted in his suspension. Despite the judge’s pleas for clarity regarding his willingness to comply, Burke continued to voice his objections.

A Prolonged Incarceration

Burke’s defiance has led to his extended stay in Mountjoy Prison, a facility primarily housing individuals involved in more serious criminal activities. He contends that his imprisonment is a consequence of his unwavering commitment to his Christian beliefs and his refusal to endorse what he perceives as “transgenderism.”

Uncertain Future

While the next review of Enoch Burke’s case is scheduled for February 27th, it remains uncertain when he will agree to abide by the court order. Mr. Justice Sanfey emphasized that Burke can end his imprisonment at any time by complying with the court’s directive, but for now, the teacher stands firm in his refusal to do so.
