In a heartbreaking incident that has left a community in mourning, a 12-year-old boy from Sag Harbor tragically drowned during an annual school rafting trip in the Poconos. This devastating event occurred on Wednesday when Cesar Albarracin Guncay, a sixth grader at Pierson Middle School, was swept away in a rafting mishap on the Lehigh River.

The class trip, which was meant to be an exciting adventure, took a dark turn when the raft capsized, sending all five occupants into the frigid waters. As reported by the Carbon County Coroner’s Office, Cesar did not resurface after the vessel overturned. The Lehighton Fire Department Dive Team heroically recovered his body, but the loss has left an indelible mark on his school and community.

Superintendent Jeff Nichols expressed the school’s sorrow in a heartfelt statement, saying, “It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we share the devastating news of the passing of our beloved sixth-grade student, Cesar Albarracin Guncay, following a rafting accident that occurred during the annual class trip to the Poconos. There are no words to adequately express the depth of this loss. Cesar was a cherished member of our school family — a child who mattered deeply to all who had the privilege of knowing him. His absence will leave an irreplaceable space in our classrooms, our hallways, and our lives.”

Despite life jackets being worn at the time of the accident, Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission spokesperson Mike Parker noted the unpredictability of such recreational activities. He stated, “Even with a life jacket on, there are still other factors that can lead to tragic outcomes. Unfortunately, that’s what we seem to be dealing with in this case.” Last year, Pennsylvania recorded ten recreational boating fatalities, with eight victims not wearing life jackets.

The owners of Whitewater Rafting Adventures, the company that organized the trip, expressed their condolences, stating, “Our entire team is heartbroken by what occurred. Our first concern is for Cesar’s family and friends.” In the wake of this tragedy, school counselors have been made available to provide support to students and staff who are grappling with the shock and grief of losing a young life so suddenly.

This incident highlights the critical importance of safety measures during school outings and the need for ongoing conversations about the risks associated with recreational activities. As the community rallies around Cesar’s family, it serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the deep connections we share with our loved ones.
