Famed influencer and TikToker, Dylan Mulvaney, is making waves in the theater world as she potentially prepares to make a comeback to Broadway, not just as a social media sensation, but as a contender for one of the most memorable musical roles of all time. Mulvaney, who initially gained recognition on Broadway, is now in discussions to return to the spotlight in the upcoming revival of the legendary musical, Cabaret.
Cabaret, having achieved significant success during its London run with seven Olivier Awards, is set to reprise its performance on Broadway. The role of the Emcee, portrayed by Olivier awardee Eddie Redmayne, is anticipated to continue captivating audiences. A captivating twist to the unfolding story emerges, as trans actress and influencer, Dylan Mulvaney, is reportedly in line to audition for the role of Sally Bowles within the musical’s framework.
Sally Bowles, an iconic character within the musical, has seen numerous illustrious actresses grace the stage. From Judi Dench in the original West End production to Liza Minelli, whose portrayal in the 1972 film won her an Oscar, the role holds a rich history. More recently, Sally’s character on Broadway was brought to life by Michelle Williams, Emma Stone, and Sienna Miller.
Although renowned for her influencer status today, Mulvaney’s foundation lies in musical theater, boasting an education from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory in Music. Her journey includes starring as Elder White in the US tour of The Book of Mormon, along with significant roles in productions like Next to Normal, Legally Blonde, Spring Awakening, Bye Bye Birdie, and High School Musical off Broadway.
Should she secure her audition, this opportunity would mark Mulvaney’s debut on the grand Broadway stage. The prospect aligns seamlessly with her background, given Cabaret’s setting in the Weimar Republic-era Berlin. The production illuminates Berlin’s pre-Nazi era, characterized by its progressive and diverse culture, subsequently highlighting the initial signs of Nazi suppression against this diversity.
Mulvaney herself has experienced adversity, drawing parallels to the play’s themes. She encountered backlash from the Far Right after sharing a TikTok featuring a Bud Light can with her likeness. Following this, transphobic individuals boycotted Bud Light, engaging in acts of destruction within stores. This incident mirrors the play’s exploration of intolerance and resistance.
