Activists in Eastern Australia are gathering to mark Trans Day of Resistance 2023, with rallies and events in cities such as Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane, and Hobart. The day’s demands include an end to violence against the trans community, the removal of barriers to transitioning, the decriminalization and destigmatization of sex work, the protection of queer kids in educational settings, and an end to religious rights to discriminate against LGBTIQA+ people.
These events have garnered support from various groups, including the National Tertiary Education Union, Australian Services Union, National Union of Students (NUS) Queer/LGBTQIA+, USYD Queer Action Collective, Queer Unionists in Tertiary Education (QUTE), Union Pride, Community Legal Centres Australia, the United Workers Union NSW Branch, the NSW Greens, ASEN Canberra, Game Workers Australia, and Tech Workers from Professionals Australia.
Trans Day of Resistance is an annual event that focuses on raising awareness about the challenges and discrimination faced by transgender and gender-diverse individuals and advocating for their rights and safety. It provides a platform for the trans community and their allies to come together, express their demands, and work towards a more inclusive and equitable society.
