TL;DR

  • Trans travelers find freedom on LGBTQ+ cruises.
  • Cruises like VACAYA and Olivia offer safe spaces.
  • Community connections are formed before boarding.
  • Travelers share transformative experiences at sea.
  • Queer charters are expanding in visibility and support.

Ahoy, fabulous friends! If you thought cruising was just for straight couples sipping cocktails on deck, think again! The tide is turning, and LGBTQ+ cruises are making waves, especially for our fabulous transgender travelers. Welcome aboard the new era of queer charters where the only thing you’ll be worrying about is whether to hit the buffet or the pool first!

Take it from Mason (he/him), a 35-year-old photographer from Cincinnati, who recently sailed on a VACAYA charter. The moment he jumped into the pool, shirtless and proud, he felt a rush of freedom like never before. “Just free,” he said, as he surfaced with his chest scars visible for the first time, surrounded by a crew that didn’t bat an eye. This is what affirming travel looks like, folks!

Before these queer cruises, many trans travelers had to endure mainstream sailings that often felt more like an exercise in isolation. Michael (he/him), a 70-year-old trans gay man, recalls his years on traditional cruises with his husband, where they often dined alone and felt like outsiders. “Isolated” was the word he used to describe his experience. But on LGBTQ+ charters? It’s a whole different ball game!

Jamie (she/her), a 42-year-old trans woman, shared her own journey of navigating the waters of identity while on straight cruises. “There was a lot of validation,” she said, but it often felt like she was pretending. On a queer charter, however, she can let her guard down, walk in as her authentic self, and revel in the joy of being surrounded by others who understand her journey.

And then there’s Chelle (they/them), a nonbinary accountant who’s been on nine Olivia cruises. They’ve turned to social media to connect with other trans and nonbinary travelers before setting sail. “I want them to be able to meet you,” they say, creating a sense of community long before the ship even leaves port. Talk about setting sail with style!

Life on the ship is a stark contrast to the outside world. Mason describes the warm welcomes from the VACAYA staff, who greet guests with smiles and genuine care. “I get off the ship, and it’s like, people just stare at me,” he laments. The culture shock is real, but on board, it’s all about acceptance and celebration.

Michael found a home with Brand g Vacations, where the staff learns guests’ names and histories, creating a family-like atmosphere. For him, swimming shirtless for the first time among other men felt liberating. “It’s just so freeing to be authentically yourself,” he said, and we couldn’t agree more!

These experiences are not just about leisure; they’re about liberation. For many, a week at sea can feel like a lifetime of freedom. Jamie reminds us that while these spaces are affirming, they’re not without challenges. “Understand that there will still be microaggressions, even in the safest space,” she cautions. But the camaraderie and acceptance make it all worthwhile.

As the infrastructure for queer charters continues to grow, so does the visibility of trans and nonbinary spaces. VACAYA’s Transcend Lounge and Olivia’s meetup groups are just a few examples of how these communities are expanding, proving that the sea is indeed a place for everyone.

So, if you’re considering a voyage of your own, take a page from Jamie’s book: “If you have the opportunity or the privilege, I think it’s worth exploring.” Because at the end of the day, finding your community and feeling celebrated is what it’s all about. And as Mason puts it, “I found my home, I found my community.” So, what are you waiting for? Grab your sunscreen and get ready to sail into the sunset of acceptance!
