In a video posted on Twitter, Ashton-Cirillo remained undeterred and defiant, declaring that victory belongs to Ukraine and that Putin’s aggression will not stop the fight for freedom and liberation.
Ashton-Cirillo enlisted in the Ukrainian military after covering the conflict as a journalist. She spoke to lawmakers in D.C. in December 2022 on behalf of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, advocating for continued support for Ukraine. On the one-year anniversary of Russia’s war against Ukraine, Ashton-Cirillo’s bravery and resilience inspire us all.
Ashton-Cirillo also highlighted the positive impact that Putin’s aggression has had on civil rights in Ukraine, leading to a civil rights movement that has been beneficial to the LGBTQ community. Openly queer men and women are serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and President Zelenskyy has made positive statements about civil partnerships and human rights for the LGBTQ community.
