Throughout 2023, the LGBTQ+ community and their allies have been a formidable force against anti-LGBTQ+ violence and discrimination. This year, an unprecedented number of anti-LGBTQ+ bills surfaced in the US, while the UK witnessed increasing anti-trans sentiments from political figures.
Creative Resistance
In response to these challenges, the community has demonstrated creativity and resilience. Notable was the reaction to the exclusion of transgender women from the Miss Italy pageant. Over 100 trans men, led by activist Federico Barbarossa, entered the contest in a symbolic protest against the pageantry’s rigid gender norms.
Hacking for Change
Another significant action was by queer furry hackers, SiegedSex, who targeted government agencies in states with anti-trans legislation. This digital activism highlighted the ongoing legislative attacks on the trans community and gender-affirming healthcare.
Drag Performers Take a Stand
In Florida, drag performers and allies gathered in large numbers at the state Capitol, protesting against discriminatory legislation. This protest, led by drag activist Darcel Stevens, emphasized the community’s commitment to political activism and resistance against policies undermining LGBTQ+ rights.
Global Voices for LGBTQ+ Rights
The LGBTQ+ struggle also saw global solidarity. The Dyke Project in London replaced Transport for London adverts with stories of LGBTQ+ Palestinians, reminding the world that the fight for queer rights is universal and interconnected.
